Called “Graveyard of the Atlantic”, Congress finally authorized the construction of a lighthouse to cover this area. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse was finished in 1870. At 198 feet tall, it is the tallest lighthouse in America. The beacon at its top is automated and is visible every seven and a half seconds.
