This lighthouse, located on the Southern Outer Banks of North Carolina, is one of the few lighthouses that operate during the day. The 163 foot tall conical tower is constructed of brick and its beacon has a 15-second flash cycle. This tower is the only one in the United States to bear the checkered day mark. This unique pattern was used for two reasons; to differentiate the lighthouse from others in the area, and to show direction.
