Out of all the aspects of the New England fisheries of the 19th century, none was more distinctive and colorful than that of the mackerel purse seine fishery with its specialized gear, its exacting and carefully-timed techniques, and the fast, handsome schooners built specifically for this seasonal work. The Mystic has a wide long low hull with a pointed bow designed for speed. This ship is painted in a rich forest green and dark rust. There are scores of finely carved deck details and fittings to enjoy- especially appealing are the two small fishing dories. The intricate rigging will heighten your enjoyment of this true American classic.

Museum Quality History of the Mystic:

Speed was the critical ingredient for a successful fishing trip: a vessel had to make a fast passage to the grounds, the crew had to be alert in their search for elusive mackerel schools, he boats and gear were designed for setting and pursing the seine with utmost speed and efficiency. Speed was also of the greatest importance in cleaning and salting the catch, for fresh-caught mackerel can spoil very quickly. Finally, the vessel had to get the fish to market in the shortest possible time, beating as many of her market-bound rivals as she could in order to get a good price for the catch while demand was high. The schooner MYSTIC was built in 1877 and confined her activities to mackerel fishing and was probably laid up in the winter. The detail work on the Mystic is made to resemble that of the original – right down to the type of materials selected. All of the parts made for the Mystic are designed specifically for this model – they aren’t substitutes from another ship. Careful precision in detail is made even in the lines.

Finish

The Mystic is accurately painted with at least two coats of paint. Five coats of lacquer are also applied, and the model is sanded and polished at each stage, giving the work a radiant finish that protects and preserves. The Mystic comes with a certificate authenticating the master who made it, it's country of origin, how the motor boat was made, and more. Packaging and Shipping

Our museum quality ships normally ship within 7-10 business days. They are carefully packaged in crates or very strong boxes, supported with forms to insure their protection during shipping. They are mailed via Fed Ex Air to further protect them and for expedient delivery. Instructions on how to unpackage the ship are found after opening the first box.
